Want to clean and optimize your PC? You've probably heard of CCleaner, arguably the world's most popular tool for doing the job. It clears out temporary files, cleans the Windows Registry, erases browser histories, and so on.
Developer Piriform (also known for Defraggler and Recuva) just released CCleaner 3.0. The big news in this update? A native 64-bit version for use with like editions of Windows.
CCleaner 3.0 also sports new icons, various interface improvements, better support for Google Chrome and Internet Explorer 9, and newly added support for programs such as AVG AntiVirus 10.0, Audacity, LogMeIn Hamachi, BitTorrent, and Windows Game Explorer.
I particularly like the way CCleaner intelligently scans for cookies you'd want to keep, like those for Google and Yahoo.
In short, CCleaner is the ultimate system-cleaning tool just got better. It's still free, thankfully, though you can purchase a priority-support license for $25.
As with any tool of this kind, I strongly recommend making a full system backup and creating a new system-restore point before using it. Better safe than sorry!
Note: CCleaner includes the option to install Google Chrome and make it your default browser. You will have to uncheck two checkboxes if you don't want this to happen. This program is donationware. It is free to try, but the author accepts and encourages donations towards further development.

Recuva Free Download
- Version: 1.40.525
- License Type: Free
- Price: Free
- Date Added: Jun 15, 2011
- Operating Systems: Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7
- Requirements: 32- or 64-bit OS
- File Size: 2395 KB
Chances are that if you've accidentally erased a file, or something malicious like a worm or virus has done it for you, Recuva will find it. It's a great little undelete program, possibly the best on the market... if you can really say donationware's on the market. Also, Recuva is the only free/donationware sector-based recovery software that I've found.
Recuva's sector-based recovry worked for me on a number of occasions, but it doesn't support SCSI--and once or twice in previous versions failed to find files. This version seems effective, so if your hard drive's health is stable, it's worth a try in that role as well--and could save you quite a bit of cash. Unless I'm absolutely sure a hard drive isn't degrading during further use, I use tried and true R-Studio Data Recovery.
Recuva has a nice-looking, simple interface as well as a wizard that will walk you through the recovery/undelete process. There are options for what type of files to search for as well as whether to enable the deep scan (sector scan) that will find files on damaged or reformatted disks.
If you just want a good un-delete program with a small disk footprint at no charge, then Recuva is what you're looking for. It's also worth a shot at recovering overwritten or damaged data on an otherwise healthy hard drive. It works on both FAT and NTFS file systems so you can undelete files on virtually any Windows PC ever made, and the interface is the very model of restrained style and efficiency.

Fact or Fiction
Claim: Warner Bros. will contribute money to the American Red Cross every time you forward an e-mail message to a friend.
Status: Not any more.
Examples: [Collected on the Internet, 2000]
|
Origins: Finally, after all those bogus messages about how you can help raise money for the treatment of sick children or receive cash and free merchandise simply for forwarding ane-mail, along came one that was for real. You could help raise money for the American Red Cross by forwarding e-mail to your friends, but Warner Bros. has discontinued the promotion.
You started by visiting the Warner Bros. web site for The Perfect Storm web site and clicking one of theForward This E-Mail links. Then you filled out the form, and for every message you sent, Warner Bros. donated fifty cents to the American Red Cross, up to a total of $50,000 (although for some reason they stopped the program after announcing they had made a $10,000 contribution to the Red Cross).
Warner Bros. said they would not be collecting e-mail addresses nor sending unsolicited mail to the addresses submitted to them.

Good Morning Wallpaper Free Download

Does your computer have a hard time getting started in the morning? Load up Good Morning wallpaper and give it a good jolt of caffeine. (Disclaimer: Your PC may not actually run faster, but it will definitely look cooler.)
Sometimes it feels like we've got two choices for our Windows wallpapers: eye-catching photos that can be distracting, or really boring plain-vanilla colored backgrounds. The talented contributors toSimple Desktops offer a third option: simple wallpaper designs that are definitely not boring. This Good Morning wallpaper by Mexican designer Axel Valdez is one of my favorites; another is Mike Smiy's Guinness Glass.
Note: To load this wallpaper, just download the file and right-click it, then select Set as desktop background. If your browser opens the image automatically, right-click the page and select Set As Desktop Background (your browser may use different wording).

Health Tip For The Day
Asthma Warning | |
Many people with asthma are able to exercise safely, but new research suggests that dehydration may increase the likelihood of an attack. Researchers at the University of Buffalo, New York, found that individuals with exercise-induced asthma experienced a significant decrease in lung function when dehydrated. It is speculated that dehydration can cause bronchospasm, which is a constriction or tightening of the airways of the lungs. |

Fact for the Day
"New Zealand is the first country to allow women to vote"
Women's suffrage in New Zealand was an important political issue in the late 19th century. Of countries presently independent, New Zealand was the first to give women the vote in modern times. The Electoral Bill granting women the franchise was given Royal Assent by Governor Lord Glasgow on 19 September 1893, and women voted for the first time in the election held on 28 November 1893 (elections for the Māori seats were held on 20 December). In 1893, Elizabeth Yates also became Mayor of Onehunga, the first time such a post had been held by a female anywhere in the British Empire.
In 1893, the British colony of New Zealand became the first self-governing nation to extend the right to vote to all adult women, and the women of the nearby colony of South Australia achieved the same right in 1895 but became the first to obtain also the right to stand (run) for Parliament (women did not win the right to run for the New Zealand legislature until 1919).The first European country to introduce women's suffrage was the Grand Principality of Finland and that country, then a part of the Russian Empire with autonomous powers, produced the world's first female members of parliament as a result of the 1907 parliamentary elections.

A to-do list is a very tidy thing. Items are listed in orderly progression, a neat sequence of checkboxes to be marked as done in due time. For some people, that works. Others (myself included) need a bit more chaos in their organization. Stickies lets me spread my to-do list all over my desktop and arrange it so that it makes visual sense to me.
You may think having your desktop covered in sticky notes is irritating. That is actually true: It does feel cluttered, especially if you've got a large backlog of tasks you wrote down and didn't do. That's part of the magic of Stickies: It gets you to actually do your to-do list, because you want to remove those notes and uncover your fancy wallpaper.
To create a new note, simply hit Win+S from any application across your system. This global shortcut can be changed or disabled, but it's on by default. There are a number of other handy shortcuts, such as Alt+Ctrl+S for creating a sticky and instantly populating it with the clipboard contents. However, this is just scratching the surface of what Stickies can do.
Stickies can contain rich text as well as images. If you type "[]" (open bracket then close bracket), Stickies automatically turns that into a checkbox. Stickies also handles Hebrew and Arabic gracefully, and does not get mixed up if a right-to-left line contains English text.
While editing a sticky note, you can press Ctrl+Shift+A to access the Set Alarm dialog. You can also do this by right-clicking the note. Once there, you can set the note to pop up at a certain time and date. When the time comes, the note sets itself as "always on top" and starts vibrating--moving in very rapid, small motions in all directions. The effect is very noticeable.
You can also set alarms to recur; you can have Stickies remind you to water your plants every three days or update your resumé every six months, for example. You do this by right-clicking a note's title bar and selecting Sleep > Recurring. Recurring notes can also have an end-date.
Speaking of the title bar, you can collapse each note down to the title only. You can also use the title-bar to set the note as "always on top," and of course, to close the note. And if you closed an important note by mistake, the Manage Stickies dialog (easily accessible through Ctrl+M from any note) lets you browse and search all notes, including closed ones. Incidentally, that means if you've written down some sensitive information in a sticky note and want to make sure it's gone, you should delete that information yourself (using plain old Backspace on your keyboard) prior to closing the sticky note.
Stickies packs so much functionality into its 1MB installer, I cannot begin to cover it all. I haven't even touched on its networking facilities, which let you send notes to other computers on your LAN.
Stickies is an essential part of my daily workflow. It is one of the first applications I install on any Windows machine I use, and it ensures I always have the information I need right in front of me. Highly recommended.

avast! Free Antivirus
Avast Free Antivirus 5 took the top spot in our late 2010 roundup of free antivirus software. It provides good, all-around malware detection in a speedy, well-designed package. We liked its easy installation process, smooth interface design, and minimal impact in system performance. However, although it wins out overall, its malware detection, while good, isn't the best we've seen.
Avast Free Antivirus 5 is well designed and generally easy to use. In most respects, it's a somewhat scaled-down version of the paid Avast Pro Antivirus 5. The installation process was quick and painless, and I had to click through only a couple of screens before it started installing. The main screen is laid out nicely and is easy to use, though not without its flaws. A slightly annoying aspect of Avast Free Antivirus the fact that a banner advertising its paid counterpart will appear on the Summary tab, but since it's unobtrusive, it isn't a serious issue.
